Cross-Country Skiing

Members organize cross-country skiing trips to a number of regional destinations.  Trips have included the Methow Valley trail system, Whistler's Nordic Area and Callahan Valley, Silver Star BC, and Mt. Bachelor, OR.

Members also frequently meetup for day trips to sno-park cross country trails and local commercial trail systems at Snoqualmie Pass and Stevens Pass.

Both Classic and Skate Skiing are represented, though classic skiers tend to outnumber the skaters.  Participants tend to cluster around the intermediate/blue trail difficulty level, though we almost always have some beginners on trips.

Sun Mountain and Winthrop offer 130 miles of groomed trails and spectacular flat valley and mountain terrain cross-country skiing at all levels.  February is the best month for snow at Winthrop and Okanogan County.  This is some of the best cross-country skiing in the country according to X-Country Skier Magazine.

Please join trip leader, Paul Horne, and other Ski Buddies the weekend of February 1-3, 2019.  We will arrive at Sun Mountain on Friday afternoon and depart Sunday afternoon while staying at the largest groomed Nordic ski area in the PNW located in the scenic Methow Valley. This is a huge area with over 60 KM in groomed trails!

We are staying in the rustic Lake Patterson Cabins which are ski in/out. The cabins are located near the main lodge with all the other amenities available for our use.  Paul will provide dinner on Friday evening.  Breakfasts will also be provided on Saturday and Sunday.

Cost for both nights is $300 per single bed or $600 queen bed (one or two people).  Space is limited to four (4) queens and five (5) single beds.  If we have a lot of interest, we may be able to secure another unit.

For Saturday night, we have a VERY FUN Sleigh Ride & Cowboy dinner.  The Clydesdale drawn large sleigh departs the main lodge on Saturday evening at 5pm sharp. The brief ride takes us to the top of a hill overlooking the valley and to a large cozy tent. Inside awaits a buffet style cowboy dinner served by friendly locals, and live music.

For those going on this trip, Paul recommends taking Friday off as the drive from Seattle to Winthrop is a minimum 6 hours' drive via Ellensburg in ideal weather. You can NOT get there in winter via SR20 through Cascades National Park.

Like all Ski Buddies trips, the first ones to pay in full are on the trip.  Don't delay booking as this trip will sell out quickly!

The Lazy Bear Lodge is everything you need to relax in one of America's largest outdoor playgrounds. Only a mile away is Silver Mountain Resort and Water Park featuring renown skiing, snowboarding and downhill mountain biking, plus the longest gondola in the country if you just want to see breathtaking views. The Lazy Bear is approximately 3,000 square feet and features five themed, comfortable bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a roomy living room, dining room, spacious fully equipped kitchen and an outdoor hot tub. Our plan is to ski both Silver and Lookout depending on weather and snow - we may ski Silver on Friday, Lookout on Saturday, and Silver on Sunday making for a shorter drive home after the trip.

Price: $175 includes 3 nights lodging, limited beer/wine party 2 nights, continental breakfast on Friday and Saturday.  Price is per person based on double occupancy sleeping/shared queens beds. Individual beds are available at 2X the pp rate.

We again have exclusive use of our favorite Cabin, just off the Highway and within two miles of Stevens Pass downhill area and only a few miles from the Nordic Center.

Prices will also include very basic continental breakfasts. Most dinners tend to be a potluck with the Saturday dinner as the main potluck where we invite others to join us up in the mountain for the day and then come back to the cabin to enjoy a nice dinner before heading home.

Lunches, dinners, lift tickets and transportation are participants’ responsibility through most dinners tend to be potlucks with people sharing dishes.

This trip is perfect for those new to Ski Buddies and provides a lot of social interaction throughout the weekend.  Prepare for games, music and fun.

Join Us for the Day or Saturday Potluck:  Club members are welcome to join us during the day or meet us at lunch time if they come up for the day.  Feel free to contact the trip leader by texting his cell phone (Cell service is spotty, so texting works the best).  We’ll try to meet up around 9AM at the Clock each day on Friday and Saturday.  As always, we have our official potluck on Saturday night and all are welcome to come back with us and enjoy dinner before heading back (or pass out at the lodge)

Dinner is followed by a torch parade and fireworks display.  Capping off the night is live music in the bar until midnight.

White Pass management is offering us group discounted Alpine lift passes and Nordic passes, prices to be announced.
